  • 1/2 unbleached white flour

  • 2 Tbsp sesame seeds

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp onion salt

  • 1 pinch ground pepper

  • 1 egg

  • 2 Tbsp milk

  • 4 Tbsp vegetable oil

Tools Needed

  • 1 chef’s knife

  • 1 cutting board

  • 2 small bowls

  • 1 set measuring spoons

  • 1 set dry measuring cups

  • 1 wooden spoon

  • 1 whisk

  • 1 large skillet

  • 1 plate

Steps:

Ambrosia Salad

  1. Peel oranges over a medium bowl and separate each segment. Save any juice caught in the bowl. Cut the segments into pieces.

  2. Place the cut orange segments into the medium bowl with the orange juice. Toss gently with powdered sugar and coconut.

Fried Green Tomatoes

  1. Slice tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick slices

  2. On a plate, combine the cornmeal, flour, sesame seeds, salt, onion salt, and black pepper. In a small bowl, whisk the egg and milk together.

  3. Dip the tomato slices into the egg mixture, then coat both sides of the tomato with the cornmeal mixture.

  4. Do not begin cooking until 5 minutes before eating. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.

  5. Fry the tomato slices in a single layer until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately.
